Secret #2: We don’t know how to pray for you.
It sounds ridiculous, I know. You are our children, after all, our favorite humans on the planet. You are the ones for whom we want the most.
We want you to be healthy and free and confident and wise.
We want you to be safe and loved and cared for and invested in.
We want you to feel deep in your bones the things we know are true. We want to teach you well, but mostly we want you to experience it for yourself so it can be fully yours.
We want you to understand love the way we understand love, not as a thin veneer of words and deeds but as a glorious infection that redefines everything from inside out. We want you to hear our hearts handed to you in those three words, hearts that are indelibly linked to yours and will not be severed by anything you say or do, now or later, ever.
We want you to stop seeking our approval. You had it before we met you. We want you to live in joy.
We want to shield you from the dark shadows that lie ahead. We want to walk with you through it all. We want to rescue you when you feel frightened and out of control, hold you when you feel broken and alone, take on all your hurt.
We want everyone who will ever be anything to you to be honest and kind and good. If you marry, we want the best, kindest, most honest, funniest and most fiercely loving soul to be the one that you choose and the one who chooses you.
We want you give lavishly and receive gratefully. We want you to know the privilege of doing work you love.
We want so much for you. We raise you up to God on frail hands, try hard to hear our thoughts over the hum of our loud love for you, but sometimes it is no use.
How can pray for you when our every thought of you is a prayer?
When the Bible says the Spirit intercedes for us through our silence and groans, we know this is for us.
So we sit in silence and we whisper, “Please, Lord. Yes, Father. Thank you, thank you,” because sometimes it is all we know to say. And the God who made you understands, because He is a parent, too.
