Yesterday I returned home from a conference where we discussed how to steward well the influence we all have.
Tomorrow, October 1, is the release of A Million Little Ways, the newest book from Emily P. Freeman.*
In my mind, the two are indelibly connected. Here’s a 1 minute 34 second video that explains why.
Friend, you have art to offer a weary world.
It may look like words on paper, it may look like color on canvas. It could take the form of numbers in a spreadsheet or gauze wrapped gently around a wound. It could look like one of a million different things, but it is uniquely yours.
If you don’t offer it, who will?
I admit I’ve yet to read the book; it arrived the day before conference madness begun, so I haven’t had the chance. But I’ve known Emily and her words a while now, and I’ve come to trust them both. I have no doubt the truth in this book will affect my heart and art for the better.
To prove it, I opened it somewhere in the middle and found this quote for you in less than 30 seconds. #truestory
The upside-down mystery of God is that you can still be a miracle gift even when you have no idea where your giftedness comes from, even when all you can bear to do is know you are loved and live like it’s true. You are art and you make art, but you are not your art. You are God’s art…
What if you began to see your art as something other than your idea? What if it was less lofty and more necessary to your daily rhythm? What if your art is part of a bigger picture, part of a daily grace God has in mind for someone else? (p.84-85)
That last sentence just gets me.
So I did it again, a handful of pages and 30 more seconds later.
It isn’t about you finding those things that make you come alive so that you will be awesome and admired. It isn’t about discovering the art you were born to make because that is the highest goal of humanity. It isn’t about getting in touch with your desires so that you can forsake all responsibility and obligation and do what you want because you deserve it. It isn’t about becoming famous. It is about becoming yourself. (p.164-165)
I need this book. I can already tell.
Do you need it to? You can order yours here.*
It is from Him. It is for them.
How amazing is that?
*Release date is confirmed as Oct 1, not Nov 15. Just an Amazon typo.
